I had a tarot reading with Tatianna Tarot at the Zodiac Lounge a few weeks ago, and the first card that popped up was The Emperor. Tatianna tilted her head and asked, "What's your relationship with authority?"
It was all I could do to not bust out laughing. Ever since I started my first business, Bluestockings Boutique, the Emperor has been stalking my ass. You know what I mean -- the stalker card that always comes up, not just when you read for yourself but also when others read for you?
Tatianna had a badass read on the Emperor for me (the short version: I've got Warrior Woman energy, which is excellent since I love Xena), but it was a reminder of just how much growing I've done, specifically as a girlboss, in regard to the energy this card talks about.
It's easy to get caught up in traditional readings of this card which blather on about paternalism and father figures and authoritarian dudes. Ignore that.
Yes, the card has to do with authority. Yes, it has to do with how we externally interact with authority and structure. But no, it is not gendered, goddammit. Can we all just not call cards "masculine" or "feminine" pls kthx.
ANYWHOODLE. Here are three lessons for your brand, from the (totally girlboss) Emperor:
1. @@Ground yourself, dammit.@@
If you're not physically and soulfully grounded, your business will not be grounded and your brand sure as hell won't be.
(Quick: your business? That's the actual operation. The brand? That's your vision -- your intangible "what" and "why," consistently delivered.)
The Emperor is grounded. They have both feet on the ground. Like, literally. The power emanates... but they are rooted.
There is powerful earth energy in this card, screaming out:
Get. Your shit. Together. Take care of your body, your mind, your emotions, your spirit.
As you go, so goes your business. If you aren't functional, it will not be.
2. You don't just need "structure." You need the right kind of structure.
Structure is absolutely worthless without intention and a grounded understanding of what you need, in this moment.
Specifically, you need a structure that aligns with your being. With your soul. With your desires. Not just with "what's good for business" or "what online infopreneurs do" or "what Marie Forleo did." (Marie Forleo is totes rad. Because she's true to herself.)
Also - step one comes first! When you're grounded, it's a lot easier to figure out what structures and systems work for your brand and what doesn't.
3. Structure enables flow.
This one realization absolutely changed the Emperor card for me.
The Emperor kept coming up for months in readings, and I would get so frustrated. I didn't understand why this authoritarian asshole kept showing up.
But one day, I was sitting in my apartment, staring at the Emperor card from the Shadowscapes deck, and realized that the Emperor, so grounded, so fiercely, stubbornly holding that thing between his hands, was surrounded by a circle. AKA flow. AKA infinite. AKA possibility.
And JFC, that blew my mind. I'd been staring at this card for months and hadn't realized that the whole POINT of introducing structure into your life is to give the gift of flow.
Flow comes so much easier when you've got soul-aligned systems in place.
